LinkedIn Basics
LinkedIn is a business-focused network. The vast majority of users here are using LinkedIn for some kind of business networking purpose such as job hunting, marketing, or sales. It’s a smaller network compared to the mammoth Facebook, but it’s highly targeted for reaching professionals who can afford your services.
Your LinkedIn profile can read more like a résumé as you can include work history along with website and social media links. Be sure to have keywords in mind when writing your LinkedIn profile. It should have a solid description of your business and what you do. Keywords can help others find you when they search for related keywords. I have received many business opportunities as a direct result of filling out my profile as completely as possible.
When you send a connection request to users on LinkedIn, you are required to know them or be acquainted with them in some way. It’s harder to build a large following here because you will need to know the person’s email address or be members of the same group on LinkedIn to connect. You can also import your contacts into LinkedIn to easily locate the people you know.
With LinkedIn, you can share status updates just like you do on Facebook and Twitter. You can also ask people to write a testimonial for you, which will be publicly visible.
You can also search LinkedIn for names or keywords. If you would like to connect with someone you don’t know, look to see if you have any connections in common. If so, you can ask to be introduced. Some business owners use this method to generate leads and reach out to new contacts. If you don’t share a common connection, you can upgrade to a paid LinkedIn account and gain the ability to send a limited number of LinkedIn mail messages to contacts outside of your network. I use this feature and find it valuable for connecting with executives and otherwise hard-to-reach prospects.
